Remembering Roger McEwan

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Roger McEwan on August 8, 2025.

Roger was more than a Canadian rugby icon, he was a cherished member of the Saracens family. As a player and later a coach, he led the Saracens to a historic Carling Cup championship in 1978. He went on to coach the University of Toronto Varsity Blues to multiple Ontario titles, guided provincial and national junior teams, and served as a Canadian Senior Team Selector. His leadership extended to Rugby Ontario, where he championed women’s rugby, athlete and coach development, and helped grow the game across the country

For many of us, Roger wasn’t just a legend of the game, he was a mentor, a storyteller, and a proud supporter who continued to follow our club’s progress each season. Earlier this year, we were honoured to introduce him to the team after our first game in Belleville. For those present, it was a chance to connect with someone whose vision and dedication helped shape not only the Saracens, but Canadian rugby as a whole.

The McEwan Cup

Roger’s legacy will live on in many ways, including through the inaugural McEwan Cup—a new annual fixture between the University of Toronto and York University. The match will take place on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM at Varsity Stadium. Several current Saracens will take the field, and many alumni will be in attendance to honour Roger’s memory.

A Life Well Lived

Roger’s impact extended far beyond rugby. Born in Upminster, Essex, England in 1944, he was a runner, a DJ, a book lover, and a lifelong West Ham United supporter. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, his passion for sport, and his ability to connect with people in meaningful ways.

Roger is survived by his partner Kay, his brothers John and Neil, his extended family, his beloved dog Petra, and countless friends, players, and colleagues whose lives he touched.

On behalf of the Toronto Saracens, we extend our deepest condolences to Roger’s family and loved ones. We are grateful for his lasting contributions to our club and to the sport we love.

In lieu of flowers, Roger’s family asks that we honour his memory in the best ways he knew how—hug your dog, play your favourite song, or raise a glass to a life well lived.
